Science Research at Duquesne

Research at the Bayer School of Science encompasses many topics in modern chemistry, biology, and physics. The range of topics includes: cosmological investigations of remote galaxies; environmental polution resulting from the use of specific poultry feeds; organic and metallochemistry synthesis; and developmental, microbiological, and biomedical aspects of biology.

Currently, the Center for Environmental Research and Education (CERE) within the Bayer School is undertaking a habitat restoration project in Armstrong County, PA. Immune Gene Regulation


Molecular model of a complex formed between Spi-1/Pu.1 and IRF8 transcription factor proteins bound to DNA. The formation of this sort of structure was recently reported by the Auron laboratory to be a likely component for expression of the interleukin 1beta (IL1B) gene in response to bacterial infection.

NMR Upgrade

The National Science Foundation grant for upgraded NMR facilities was awarded to chemistry faculty (from the left), Dr. Partha Basu, Dr. Fraser Fleming, Dr. Rita Mihailescu; and Dr. Tomislav Pintauer (seated). The group gathers by the 400 MHz Bruker NMR, which replaces a 300 MHz model.

Arsenic in Chicken Feed

Roxarsone, an organic arsenic compound, has been added to chicken feed since the 1960s to increase growth rate and produce meatier chickens. But researchers at the Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences have found that these bigger chickens may carry a hidden threat to public health.
