Michael Gomez, B.S. University of Miami May 2001, Mike is a medical school student at Tulane University. He has recently been “matched” at the University of Texas, Southwest Medical School for Surgery to complete his medical training. This is one of the most competitive programs for surgery in the United States.

Norton, B.S. honors, University of Miami May 2001, Honors Thesis: “Density Functional Study of Calixarenes and Alkali Metals Cations.” Joe is a Ph.D. graduate student at UCLA with Prof. Kendall N. Houk. Joe was awarded a 1999 UM Honors Scholarship and 1999 Arts and Sciences Academic Fellowship. I have co-authored a peer-reviewed publication with Joe in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Steve Arnstein, B.S. honors, Duquesne University May 2005, Honors Thesis: “Theoretical Treatment using QM/MM methods to Understand the Water Dimer.” Steve is a Ph.D. chemistry graduate student at Georgia Technical Institute with Prof. C. David Sherrill. Steve was awarded the 2004 Bayer School Summer Research Fellowship. Steve has two manuscripts in preparation from his honors thesis.

Jason DeChancie, B.S. honors, University of Pittsburgh May 2004, Honors Thesis: “Density Functional Determination of Steric and Solvent Contributions to the Enantioselectivity Delivered by Bis(oxazoline)-Cu(II) Catalyzed Diels-Alder Reaction.” Jason is a Ph.D. chemistry graduate student at UCLA with Prof. Kendall N. Houk. Jason was awarded 2001 and 2002 Bayer School Summer Research Fellowships. He also was an NSF-REU recipient at UCLA in 2002. I have co-authored two peer-reviewed publications with Jason in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and in the Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modelling.

Carlos F. López, B.S. honors, University of Miami May 1998, Honors Thesis: “Study of Non-Bond Interactions in Organic and Biophysical Systems: Catalysis in Pericyclic Reactions and Conformational Studies of Unfolding of Calmodulin.” Carlos earned his Ph.D. August of 2005 year at the University of Pennsylvania with Prof. Michael Klein. He is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Austin with Peter Rossky. Carlos was a 1997 UM Arts and Sciences Minority Fellow.

Pablo Davidov, B.S. honors, University of Miami May 1997, Honors Thesis: “Dual Experimental and Theoretical Study of Supramolecular Complexes Involving Cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) Derivatives and Substituted Aromatic Guests.” Pablo graduated with a Ph.D. from UCLA with Prof. Michael Jung in 2001, and joined Peter Dervan at Cal Tech as a postdoctoral fellow. Pablo is currently employed by the Central Intelligence Agency. Pablo was a 1996 UM Arts and Sciences Minority Fellow. I have co-authored two peer-reviewed publications with Pablo in the Journal of Organic Chemistry and in the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry.

Miriam Richardson, B.S. honors, University of Miami May 1996, Honors Thesis: “Quantum Mechanical Studies of Fundamental Atmospheric Processes and Multivariate Analysis of Conformational Substates of Proteins.” Mimi went to Yale University and received her Masters degree. She is now employed as an industrial chemist in Boston. Mimi was a 1995 UM Arts and Sciences Minority Fellow.

Matt Repasky, B.S. honors, University of Miami May 1996, Honors Thesis: “Molecular Dynamics Studies of Supramolecular Assemblies: Liquid-Crystalline Lipid Bilayers and Epitaxial Nanocrystallites.” Matt graduated with a 2002 Yale Ph.D. with Prof. William Jorgensen, and is currently employed at Schrodinger, Inc. Matt won the 1995 UM Honors Scholarship. I have co-authored a peer-reviewed publication with Matt as a book chapter.

Ed Franklin, M.S. Forensic Science and honors B.A. Chemistry Candidate, Duquesne University. President of AXE 2005. Ed joined the ERG as a Freshman. Ed graduate from ?? High School as a Valedictorian and received XXX prestigious undergraduate fellowships to attend Duquesne University. Ed’s current research involves the understanding of bis(oxazoline) Cu(II) catalyzed chemical reactions and the secondary anchor substitutions in HLA-A*0201-restricted T-cell epitopes derive from Her-2/neu. Ed has been a Bayer School Research Fellow in 2004 and 2005.

Ed Franklin

B.S. 2006 honors

Ryan Newton, Honors B.S. Candidate, Duquesne University. President of AXE 2006. Ryan joined the ERG after honors Organic Chemistry in his second year. Outside of the laboratory, Ryan is also a registered Captain of the Gateway Fleet. Ryan’s current research involves the understanding of implicit solvation techniques for molecular dynamics simulations and the calibration of quantum chemical methods on the structure and thermochemical parameters of important organic reactions. Ryan has been a Bayer School Research Fellow in 2005.

Lauren Matosuzki, Honors B.S. Candidate, Duquesne University. [Add scholarship information and high school honors] Lauren joined the ERG before the first semester of honors Organic Chemistry. Lauren’s current research involves the understanding of bis(oxazoline) Cu(II) catalyzed chemical reactions. Specifically, she is working out how substitutions on the dienophile influence the stereoselectivity of the Michael Addition.

Michael Lacina, A M.S. Education and B.S. Chemistry Candidate, Duquesne University. Michael is currently on the Duquesne University Track Team, specializing in the 400 and 800 m race. Mike joined the ERG at the start of his junior year. Mike’s research interest are in understanding how the ONIOM QM/MM method can be used to study peptides and proteins.
